Operate a BKM-10R

A BVM whose model number ends in 1 is a display unit: it has no controls of its own, and without a Monitor Control Unit there is no way to adjust it. This is that unit — the rack-width BKM-10R, driving the BVM-20E1U. Every button does what Sony says it does, the knobs turn, and the MENU button opens Sony’s whole menu tree. Press anything; the panel on the right quotes the manual.

What the picture is doing

The picture is a 240p test frame drawn in the browser, not a photograph of the 20E1U, and the effects are illustrations of what each control changes: UNDERSCAN pulls the raster in so the blanking edges show; H DELAY and V DELAY shift the raster so the sync intervals land on screen; BLUE ONLY and the R, G, B keys cut guns; MONO drops chroma; APT sharpens; 16:9 letterboxes the 4:3 tube; SAFE AREA draws the action-safe box; DEGAUSS throws the picture for a moment the way a tube does. Channels 91 to 95 call up PLUGE, 20 % gray, 100 % white, a five-step gray scale and crosshatch, which is what Sony assigns them. The menu tree follows Sony’s numbering — 100 CONTROL PRESET ADJ through 900 STATUS — and most leaves are shown rather than functional; the ones that toggle do toggle.

Everything quoted is from Sony’s BVM-14E1/14E5/14F1/14F5/20E1/20F1, BKM-10R Operation and Maintenance Manual, read in full; the three Shift-Off labels UNDERSCAN, H DELAY and V DELAY were garbled in the scan and are placed from the REMOTE function list and the panel layout. The handheld BKM-11R is a separate, smaller unit and is not modeled here. Which controllers fit which chassis is on the BKM reference; why the 1 in BVM-20E1U means this unit is needed is on the model-number page.
